When candidates for Adult Reconstructive surgery want access to the latest in orthopaedic medicine, they visit the doctors at Wellington Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine. All are board certified surgeons who specialize in advanced surgical techniques, such as Computer Navigated surgery for total and partial joint replacements. These new technologies and surgical techniques allow the physicians to place and align the new implants with enhanced accuracy and precision. For the patient, it means less pain, quicker healing and returning to a more active lifestyle.
Wellington’s Joint Replacement and Reconstruction specialists are dedicated to bringing the latest and best in innovative surgical techniques and equipment to their patients. For example, using the hana™ anthroplasty table, an ingenious piece of equipment that allows Wellington’s team of surgeons to operate on the joint from different angles, replacing the hip or knee with a single incision and without detaching muscle from bone. The body is held in specific positions that offer more access for the surgeon and more joint stabilization for the patient. This new, minimally invasive approach significantly reduces the pain and recovery period of traditional joint replacement surgery.
Continuing with the use of innovative surgical techniques, the physicians often utilize “Cell Saver” technology, which employs a machine to salvage, wash and filter a patient’s own blood so that it can be reused in their body during surgical procedures. This technique virtually eliminates the need for a preoperative blood donation and postoperative blood transfusion while providing insurance against contracting outside diseases from donor blood.
A fundamental part of the Wellington’s Joint Replacement and Reconstruction Service is education and community outreach. All of the physicians are active in teaching, clinical research and lecturing locally, nationally and internationally. Although their initial discussions with patients tend to focus on non-surgical approaches to treatment, when surgery is necessary, patients go through a “total joint class” which prepares them for surgery and helps to minimize anxiety by familiarizing them with the surroundings and the people who will be taking care of them.
